“Mom, why is a porn star on the front page of the newspaper?”

When I heard my neighbour’s 8 yr old son ask her that, my head actually did turn to him! The 8 year old kid knows who the lady in the skimpy bikini was? And he asked “WHY”. Woah! so does he know what ‘porn’ is? Either there something wrong with him or I,despite being born in the 90s think that I might have gone a decade older! I couldn’t let this pass. I don’t think that is normal for an 8 yr old to know about the porn industry. How would he have known about this? Was it the school? His friends? The media?

Is that Sunny Leone promoting her new movie on the front page of India's leading newspaper?

Is that Sunny Leone promoting her new movie on the front page of India’s leading newspaper?

(Disclaimer: Please continue to read this, only if you believe that everyone is entitled to an opinion of their own. I mean no offence to anyone. If you feel offended, you probably need to check your conscience!)

It could be the media, actually. Years ago, when the first newspaper was printed in Strausburg, little did they know that the newspaper would have a lot more than just war news, politics and general knowledge. The newspaper now, undoubtedly acts as one of the prime sources of information. And of course, over the years, newer dimensions need to be explored and written about with changing times. But does that justify the narration of an entire rape scene or how a porn star is not shy to do “bold” scenes in a bollywood film(or for that matter hollywood);covering as much as half the newspaper, right below it’s TITLE? Call me old fashioned despite being 23 but this is precisely the definition of ‘Hypocrisy’ – Having an advertisement of an NGO promoting women’s rights and an exposing semi nude pictured article on the same page!

Yes, I might have ignited some controversial thoughts in the minds of testosterone controlled species. But, I don’t mean to say that news like these shouldn’t be covered or brought to people’s notice. Sure, they could be written about but may be not on the front page. Previously, grandparents would imbibe the “reading of newspapers” habit in their grandchildren early in the morning before having breakfast. And now, the parents need to check if there’s something outcasting before they hand out the paper to them. But then not everyone has the time to keep a check on that everyday.

Some would say that there is nothing wrong showcasing the story of a porn star changing her lifestyle and moving on to mainstream cinema. Everyone deserves a second chance, right?

Then how would you explain the meaning of  “pornography” to children? It isn’t something a husband is proud of talking to his wife, let alone to the kids! How do you stand up and fight for Nirbhaya and many other rape victims when you promote semi nude images on the front page of leading newspapers? You can install “Parental control” on the internet, change the channel of content you don’t approve of. The Censor board even censors words like “making out/you suck/what a jerk” and during commercials, put up music video trailers saying “choti dress mein bomb lagdi mainu”(You look like a bomb to me in your short dress) . Anyway, now do you STOP taking the country’s “leading” newspaper? And it isn’t just one day or one article. But a series of them that keep coming everyday.

A national team winning an international discuss throw event would be featured 15 pages later in the “Sports” section but a scandalising movie poster would be featured on the front page of a separate and exclusive supplement of “Entertainment”.

There was once a media outburst around early 2000s when old songs were remixed and new. There would be activists’ associations and social reformists talking about it on almost all the news channels. How come no one’s talking about this? Does that mean it is normal?

So for one moment, I leave this entire opinion of mine and take that it is normal and a part of our changing culture and westernisation. We’d then be promoting our future generations to contribute to the every increasing traffic network of the porn industry. Because that’d be an easy entry to Bollywood and Hollywood. Earlier people would only suspect that the actress would’ve slept with the director/producer to get in but none would know for sure. Now, we’ll be well aware of the facts because you would’ve seen it or known someone who’s seen it. And those who haven’t seen it, would see it once the promos of the new mainstream movie hits the media, thanks to the inquisitive nature of human beings in general. Once an entry into mainstream media, then public appearances at other TV shows; soon award functions (Imagine being awarded “The Best Student” by a porn star wearing loud stuff), then inaugurations, more films and then filmfare/oscar, then politics! How about that?

Every day there are new videos being made on brining an awareness on different social issues and people merrily share them on social networking sites and get more ‘likes’ and ‘comments’ and ‘tweets’ thinking they’re actually making a difference. But on the other hand, they’d also pay steep prices and give box office hits to movies that have porn stars playing the lead role in mainstream cinema.

They deserve second chances and a chance to improve their lifestyles from whatever it might be that forced/willingly took them to the porn industry. And it’s not them to be blamed really. The society takes them there. The director brings them back. And the society promotes them. How else does an ex-“item” song dancer get to say on national television, “I’ve left Bollywood because there’s nothing more for me left to do. When all the leading bollywood actresses are now exposing and teasing so well on the screen that I don’t have much to do and hence,I’m moving to politics”. Quite a slap on the face now! Look, the actors and actresses not belonging to the industry are doing loud and explosive songs too. I’m not saying that is alright either. In fact that too has an equal impact on a person’s mind.

Human mind is very easy to mould. It falls prey easily to all things attractive and forbidden. It is human psychology. Keeping it clear is the least we can do to absorb better things in life. Unless of course, you differ. It’s your mind after all. All said and done! Let’s not be so proud of it that you think the most appropriate answer to the question asked by your kid is “Porn is sex education”.

(The next thing you know, your kid would be looking up ‘Porn’ on google and you know what happens next!)

  • There are many who’ve entered the industry this way. Cameroon Diaz and many male leads have done it too. It’s no new thing. Although yes, it doesn’t influence a lot of people!

  • You know there is a thing that – what people (or in this case, children) are denied of the most, attracts them the most

Porn, in this case, is something people keep hidden from children. As a result, they will attract children even more than anything else. At this age, it’s normal to be curious also about such things (I remember my first curiosity at around age of 9). I think that in this generation, times are moving so fast and children are “genetically” much more superior than their parents, they will learn and do things faster than we have ever done in our generation. So I think, it is better that at the age of 8-10, parents should make their children more aware of what porn is all about, and how it is different from real sex education.

But alas, very few parents will ever open their mouth on this topic near their children. Reason? Because I feel we live in a repressed society…
Also, this is the same reason that there is not even any real Sex education in India (the reason why you see Sunny Leone on front page of a newspaper, people encourage to see that here because they are sexually frustrated due to the repressive culture, and media knowing these, post such stuff on frontpage to grab eyeballs and improve their sales)

We are westernizing, but in a wrong way…. You CANNOT westernize yourself in middle of a repressed society! That will just bring in trouble.

There is really no answer otherwise as to how you can make the child NOT google what is porn… considering the circumstances.

As far as posting such stuffs on newspapers go, I think media these days have just crossed the limits of vulgarity. Not just newspapers, look at these vulgar reality shows broadcast that people of our age are watching and praising about. Don’t you think they should be restricted as well?

    • Vijay- Yes. The thing is that we watch, dance to it and encourage them. Hence, the directors and people who are fame crazy from the industry make such things! For example, that vicious woman who has been “ruling” the TV industry since ages is a prime contributor to this. If these people don’t change, the censor board should really do something abt it. And for as long as they don’t, parents and their parents need to!

Everything starts from something. And I feel that the primary reason all these is happening (including the child’s comment) is due to repressive society, lack of empathy and equality, dominance by the rich people and the entertainment industry (not to forget politics), and as a result the common man has become powerless and the rich is playing with the common man like puppets. We have to unite and think similar for some REAL action to happen.

I really like and bookmarked this article. Very well put and truly something to think about and discuss..
